Travel Update 2023: Yurok Country and the Smith River Complex Fire

Updated: Nov 14, 2023

More than just a travel destination, Yurok Country is a gateway to understanding and appreciating a deep-rooted, indigenous way of life.

However, in the face of the Smith River Complex Fire, the welcoming arms of Yurok Country are momentarily crossed. The fire, with its unpredictable nature and expansive spread, has placed a temporary pause on summer gatherings and visitor recreation.

We advise travelers to monitor updates on the Smith River Complex Fire from official sources like the Rogue Valley Emergency Management site and plan their visits once the situation stabilizes.

The safety of our visitors and the community is our first priority: Current fire conditions have made travel to and from Yurok Country a hazardous choice. With active firefighting operations, many routes to Yurok Country have become unsafe or inaccessible...

The current situation calls for patience as we let nature run its course, and support our firefighting teams in keeping our community as safe as possible.

For now, let us give the land the space and time it needs to heal and rejuvenate. The essence of Yurok Country remains, and we look forward to welcoming travelers in safer times.
